Craftsman Banister

My parent's house was built in the 70's and even though it has been remodeled, she still has some parts of the home that still need some updating, one of them being the banister. Here is a pic of that I found of me, the fam and the stair-rail.

My Parents are wanting to update it but were unsure of which style to go with. I found a house that looks like it was built around the same time and has similar bones as the Tekulve home, including the same stair-rail. These are some before and after pictures of a stair-rail from The Hillside Home that was beautifully updated.

As you can see, it is very similar to my mom's rail. Even the same type of stairway set up.

Both houses aren't craftsman style homes, but the clean lines still compliment the architecture of both homes. This would be a nice update to my mom's home and will help bring up the value if they were to move.

Ikat Captain Chairs

One thing that's hard about designing furniture is that I don't always get to see the finished product. All of the pieces usually get sent straight to the warehouse and then get delivered to the client, so enjoying the products of my labors are rare. But I do have a picture of something I did for a client back in August or so with this super cute fabric called "bergman seaglass" (look at the fabric close up here) on some lovely contemporary wing back captain chairs for each side of her silver dining table. (chair style here)

So I have been having way to much fun on Polyvore and I just might be a little obsessed. You basically can create fashion or interior design boards with out all of the cut and paste. I am currently helping update a local paint supplier's showroom. They have an unnecessarily large space that houses their paint chips. Paint chips don't take up a ton of room so we are working on some ideas to also fill some of their empty walls. This is an example of what we came up with. 4 interchangeable framed boards that can be easily repainted and switched out with a framed photo that coincides with the 4 colors.

Just did my first Christmas decorating job with the Gatehouse! This Client is having a Christmas Party and wanted her house to be ready. It was so much fun working with Joey (designer at the store) because I learn so much. She is the Christmas decorating queen! "BG" (Before Gatehouse) I didn't know there was a wrong way to make a bow!

While we are on the subject of Christmas, I thought I would post some pictures of my beautiful tree that I am so proud of. This is our first year with a normal sized tree so it was fun to start from scratch and do exactly what I wanted...blue and red!

When you work at the Gatehouse and you decorate the store with amazing and expensive decorations all day, so it makes it hard to come home to your $50 tree from Target. Unfortunately, 5 picks from the gatehouse cost more than my whole tree.... =( thus, the reason I only have 5 picks from the gatehouse.

The Tekulve Residence

Here is the inspiration board for my parents house. My mom has a very traditional style but I feel like her decor is a little too formal for the architecture of her house. Iowa's gem

My dear friend Lexie Sandberg just moved to the great state of Iowa for her husband's school for 3 years! I don't know much yet but it looks like they have a super cute apartment and of course, Lexie already got a job at J Crew and can tell you all about their pants selection.
This is why I was so excited when I came across this house featured on Country Home. First off, I already love the bungalow style house, and the interior's of this one caught my eye. And then I found out this house was in Iowa! Even better! I really enjoyed the amount of wood featured throughout the house, as well as the wood stain, I thought it was a good combination. Normally the traditional Bungalow or Craftsmen interiors are mainly wood, so I think my eyes were pleased by the combination of the bright clean walls and the warm wood accents as well as the detailing! Check out that stained glass. I just think this house looks very comfortable and livable. Watch out Lexie, Iowa is calling my name!

Zebra hide rug

I am working with a client who loves anything zebra print. In her family room we are doing an ottoman and pillows in one of my favorite zebra fabrics, it is very casual and durable so perfect for a family room. We are doing a mineral blue leather banding at the bottom and large antique nail heads on the banding.

It is going to be so cute! these are the other pillow fabrics we were thinking of for the room.

And all the pillows will have a mini ruffle in the outside fabric.

This room will be bright, casual and fun and I am super excited about it.

For her living room she was wanting it more formal but still wanted zebra print in there somewhere. So I was thinking of doing a zebra hide rug, instead of doing more pillows. Here are some inspirations...

Happy Anniversary Josh!

Josh and I have been married 3 years today! I can't imagine my life without Josh, I have no idea where I would be without him. I feel like we have accomplished more in these 3 years then I have ever had in my life. Josh has always encouraged me to work hard and follow my dreams and pushes me to fulfill my potential. I am so blessed to have such a driven, hardworking husband...and did I mention handsome! Just in the past 3 years we have had a combined total of 11 jobs, some simultaneously, We have taken a combined of total of 168 credits, a total of 6 semesters on the Deans list, we have bought a total of 28 text books, 12 of them unnecessary, 8 school inflicted melt downs, 4 internships, 2 degrees under our belts and 0 pregnancy scares! Happy anniversary baby! I can only imagine what the next 70 years will bring!

It's been a long time since this blog has been updated. A lot has happened this summer and I have been super busy. One project I had the pleasure of helping with was this home that Caitlin Creer designed. Helped as in... I ran a lot of errands and put together furniture, placed accessories, bought things. etc. Although, I did get to pick out some of the fabrics used! The home was remolded by Steve Tiek with Tiek Built Homes. He has an awesome style and I love all his detailing. This home turned out amazing. These are some pictures I got during the open house!

So as most of you may know, yes I love Harry Potter. Last week for the final movie we had our annual HP party.
As always, we had a great spread of fine wizard delicacies such as, Butter Beer, Pumpkin Juice, Pumpkin Pasties (aka pumpkin cupcakes) Licorice Wants, Chocolate Frogs, Cockroach Clusters, Acid Pops, Every Flavor Beans ANNND stew! lol.
Oh and yes, ALMOST everyone there got an acceptance letter with a real wax seal! (they aren't taking just anyone anymore)

How to be a Successful Blogger

So I thought I would write this while it's still fresh on my mind..... So last week I went to a little pow-wow in Provo called Creative Collaborative with my dear friend Sarah Savage (fellow design mate) where we learned a little sumpin' sumpin' about being a successful design blogger! And don't you worry friends and neighbors... I took notes!
Melanie Burk, (whom i found out was related to another interior design friend, Arica Young) is a graphic designer who taught one of the many "lessons/classes" at the pow-wow, who was full of good info. Her website is called Fifth and Hazel, she designs websites, blogs, logos, advertising and cool stationary. Anyway, here are a few things she thought should be considered when it comes to blogs.

1. Be prepared to spend some cash dollars for a well designed blog or website, OR buy a template, check out Theme Forest or Square Space.

2. Don't use flash on your website or blog, more than half of blog viewers are using either an iPhone or iPad

3. Buy a URL, take out the ".blogspot" with blogger most ".com's" are only $10 a year! (anticipate duckworthdesigns.com in the near future folks)

4. Make sure your website/blog have easy navigation, less than 6 pages is easiest

5. Always be updating, try to post at least one a week. shoot for 3 times a week.

6. Get your self some Google Analytics so you can track your website traffic data. This way you know who your target audience is.

7. Be digitally present. Use multiple forms of social media, like facebook and twitter, and make them accessible from your blog and/or website

8. A website is professional, a blog can be more personal.

8. Be willing to do free work to get your name out there "SMART FREE WORK" also try to give the fam a "family discount" they may be the only ones willing to pay you at first! don't let them take advantage of your abilities just because you share the same blood.

8. Do giveaways, or do trade, or favors for a blogger you admire and they will most likely blog about you...if you did a good job of course.

9. Don't be afraid to blog a little about your personal life. Show your personality. Someone may love your work but they will most likely follow your for at least a year before they will actually hire you, because at that point they feel like they know you. (thus my Harry Potter post, now you all know my obsession!)

10. Lastly, do what makes you happy.

Try these things and you will be awesome. (yet to be determined)

After pondering all that I learned at the Creative Collaborative I thought it was time to learn where people begin when considering monetizing (aka making cash dollars) from your blog. And luckily someone posted on utah bloggers meet up (find me on facebook and I'll invite you to the group) "Ten things to consider before monetizing your Blog" How convenient!

Here are some of the highlights....

Is making money really your goal? It could be that you blog as an emotional outlet, to make friends or to become recognized as an authority. Make sure that the work involved with monetization is worth it to you, because it will take a significant amount of time.
There is more than one way to monetize your blog Think beyond the banner and sidebar ad and consider spreading your income generation across several streams. Today, bloggers are making MORE money by offering subscription services, classes, patterns, video how-to’s and e-books. Take time to consider your talents and ensure that you select the method that is best for you.
Monetization will only work if you understand your community and what they will respond to. Understand your community’s interests and needs will help you select the best monetization methods. What types of products are your readers likely to buy? Are they looking for deals, or do they have money to spend? Even simple demographic information can really help. Try offering a reader survey to learn more.
Most people do not make a full-time income off their blog and the money will not be there overnight. Though you can begin monetizing your site as soon as you feel ready. It’s difficult to do before you have built some steady traffic.

Contemporary Asian Traditional?

Here is a product board I did for a client I'm helping with at the GateHouse. This is for a couple from Japan who built a house here in Utah and needed to fill it with furniture! They have a bit of a contemporary style with an Asian flair, although for the most part they wanted to keep things semi-traditional. I loved how things came together in this family room! The chairs in the zebra fabric would be amazing! I hope they dig it, cause I know I do!

Just finished up drooling over this year's Utah Valley Parade of Homes. My favorite was this home in Lindon by Hatfield Homes. The best part was the wood flooring, and the bright bold wallpaper. My biggest surprise was that the interior design was done by Four Chairs, who knew they sold more then just chairs. Maybe I should have shown up for that job interview after all. "Don't Stop Believing"

Life has been non-stop and I have been putting fun things on the back burner, such as blogging. But Duckworth Designs is still running so don't you worry!

My new job is a lot of work, aaand I still work for Caitlin Creer, so needless to say design is unconscionably being shoved down my throat!!! I can't believe how much I've learn just in this past month being out of school. Oh my cocky self thought I could jump into the world of design head on, thinking I was crafted in the ways of interiors. I was definitely not expecting the learning curve, and still so much to learn.

Things I have learned so far:

-People, even in Utah, will pay good money for good design.

-Being repetitive eventually makes you loath that certain fabric, paint color etc. (just because you love it doesn't mean you need to use it all the time)

-Pillows are like jewelry, they should be interchangeable, without them the room still should look beautiful. They don't make the room, they should just add to them.

-Good quality is always worth the price.

-If you are confident and believe in yourself, others will believe you know what your doing.

And last but not least, Pillows are a girls best friend!

New job

Graduation came and went and as of this week I have officially started my new job at the GateHouse!

This weekend I went shopping In Park City and I picked up this awwwesome shirt at the Lids Outlet, I know its a Man's shirt but hey, we all have one right? So I'm not really a Red Wings fan AT ALL, but I've been in love with their apparel, and the reason being... I love Ferris Bueller's Day off!!! In the movie, Cameron Frye sports this awesome jersey and for what ever reason I can't get enough of it. Needless to say, I have more than one. So I was so excited this week when I saw this amazing "Living In" post from Design Sponge, Living in: Ferris Bueller's Day Off Defiantly check it out, the post was So Choice!

Modern Sofa

This may be one of the more interesting sofas I've seen. The Rebecca Sofa by Bizzotto is upholstered in white leather and has a very modern shape to it. The embossed pattern adds an element of elegance, but the asymmetry still makes it look like a very fresh and modern piece. I imagine this sofa to be in Tyra Banks' Lobby! (assuming she even has a lobby)

CaesarStone vs. Marble

Who doesn't dream of having a beautiful kitchen with white marble counter tops, because I most defiantly do. Unfortunately, unless you have extreme OCD your not going to want to take care of marble, let alone white!

Plus side to Marble
-Its beautiful!

-Very porous so it retains water

-Scratches easily

-Can't put anything hot on its surface

-Stains easily!!

-Prone to cracking and chipping

-Not kid friendly

Fortunately, there is another option that can give you that same bright elegant feel and it just so happens to be sustainable (or eco-friendly) its called CaesarStone. It is a man made product but their Misty Carrera color resembles Carrera Marble most excellently.

-Crack resistant

-Heat resistant

-Non-porous

-Low maintenance

-Kid friendly

Park City Hotel Design

This past fall I had had to pleasure of staying the weekend in Park City with my husband's family at The Waldorf Astoria. The Waldorf Astoria is a new hotel in Park City located in The Canyons Resort.
I loved the feel of the hotel and I think the style of the interior would defiantly be considered "Mountain Contemporary" =) Not to mention it was my inspiration for my mountain contemporary project.

This sofa is amazing, it is 2 sided...not 2 sofas back to back, but 1 sofa with 2 sides! insane! I can't imagine fitting that through a door!

Oh no.....the Karate Chopped Pillows!!!....so bad. (the next day when no one was looking, I went around and fixed all of them...so unfortunate) They should hire me as their in-house designer so I can make sure they aren't running a muck of the pillows. I guess thats where the phrase "Pillow Fluffer" comes from. Although, after looking the phrase up on urban dictionary, it has an entirely different meaning that is actually quite crude. Sorry kids!

Anyway, the Hotel was beautiful and I'm glad we got a chance to feel fancy.

So most of you know I am currently interning for Susan of Freshly Picked. She makes extremely cute baby moccasins that famous babies wear, like the Kardashian Baby.

But she is also a bit of a designer!!!! Here is her Nautical Bedroom she designed for her kids!

Her husband built the beds and she upholstered the headboards.

She made this "shell" chandelier out of wax paper!

Welcome to East Hampton

Being a big name in design you've had your brush dipped in several different jars, but there is one jar in particular that's hosting the big time brushes, East Hampton.
You can design anywhere in the world but it seems like almost every designer's portfolio has to include an East Hampton estate, like its a requirement to be taken seriously. Although, I guess every designer should be able to cover every medium in design, so the East Hampton style is just one base that needs to be covered to let the potential clients know, "Oh hey, I can design your Manhattan office, your Park Ave. apartment...ANND your 6th vacation home in the Hamptons. Here are a few different designers takes on that weekend get away.

Cookie Advice

So today in my Resources and Career Issues class, We had a guest speaker,Tami Cromar, who owns and operates RubySnap cookie shop in Salt Lake. They make gourmet cookies made with all natural ingredients that are amazing!

Tami talked to us about the ups and downs of being an entrepreneur and starting your own business. She was full of great advice, these were some favorites.

"Make sure no matter what you choose to endeavor, that you are so passionate that you will still love it even when you feel like the journey will kill you!"
"...success means living on a perpetual learning curve, always growing, always chasing to be a step ahead. Notice I never mentioned money, money does not equal success, meeting goals and milestones does."
"Also be open to hearing others ideas, you don't have to like them, want them, but there will almost always be a growth opportunity to see another's view and cultivate new ideas."
You can't force creativity, but you can leave yourself available to inspiration by minimizing stress and distraction."
"Always treat others with the utmost respect even if they secretly grind on you from inside. Everyone IS someone and you never know when someone will step forward to be an ally in your goals."
"You don't have to be an expert at all things; you just have to be smart enough to know when to call on others for help."
"No one will guide you in what to do next, you will have to ask, look, learn, study, repeat!"
"Dead ends come, and dead ends go. Don't get discouraged, staring can feel like the hardest part. And Lastly..
"Hold onto humor for dear life, without humor you're a gonner!"

And on top of all that she makes one heck of a good cookie! Obviously, after the presentation we (Me, Lexie, Sarah and some other friends) all rushed to RubySnap to try some of these cookies we were hearing and drooling over. So our favorite was the cookie of the month of March, its called "The Lucy" and oh my wow! Its a lime dough cookie with lime zest and a lime ganache on top. But its only there in the month of March so I would jump on that if I were you. Second was "The Rici" its a coconut dough cookie with chocolate chunks and almonds! so good!

Anyway, we had some good advice and some good cookies, I'd call that a very productive day!

After visiting Interior Solutions for a school field trip yesterday, I started second guessing my decision to go into residential design. We got to tour their offices and see the new Kimball work stations. I started imagining myself working downtown at a high end corporate business as a commercial designer, wearing blazers and sitting at a glossy desk working on an iMac with fresh flowers in the corner. Looked pretty good!
I imagine the office I work at will be terribly similar to the offices in The Devil Wears Prada.

Freezer Paper Stencil

Last week I got to go to the Alt Design Summit to help with Susan's workshop! In this pic I'm making a freezer paper stencil. Here is a link to Susan's on Studio 5 explaining how a freezer paper stencil, works. It's really fun and easy.

This is what it turned out like... a little messy, but thats because I suck with an exacto knife.
